Experience

Jerry Ma is an economist, technologist, and advocate with experience spanning academia, industry, and government. As the Director of Emerging Technology & Chief AI Officer at the USPTO, he leads initiatives to advance the agency's mandate to promote scientific progress and economic growth globally. His portfolio includes research, development, and delivery of mission-critical emerging technologies, technology policy and practice, and outreach to researchers, innovators, and the IP law community. 

Previously, Jerry held senior technical roles at Facebook AI Research (Meta), where he co-authored the first open-source superhuman Go bot and managed the biological sequence research group. He also worked as a Machine Learning Engineer at Quora, focusing on quantitative research and predictive modeling, and at Hummingbird RegTech, where he spearheaded technology initiatives for financial compliance. 

Jerry's interests include emerging technology, AI research, machine learning, and financial regulation technology. He has published at venues such as ICML, ICLR, AAAI, and S&P, exploring topics like nonconvex optimization, quasi-linguistic structure, and energy-based neural modeling.
